The Planning Authority is to consider a development application by the Infrastructure Ministry for a project which will see the demolition of the boundary fence and the opening up of the Dock 1 area of Cospicua to the public for the first time in generations.
The development application proposes hard and soft landscaping works to create an open space, including demolition of the boundary fence and ancillary structures at the Dockyard Creek.
The now enclosed area around the dock and quay will be opened up and integrated with the two central squares of Cospicua - Mirah Gavino Gulia and Misrah Paolino Vassallo.
The parvis of St Theresa Church will be upgraded and the facade of the Regatta Club will be redesigned. The area will also feature grass dunes, with a maximum height of 1.5m along Triq Santa Tereza.
The historic profile of the dock will be restored and a bridge spanning over the entrance to the dock is also proposed.
New parking facilities will be provided along the sides of Triq Santa Tererza and Triq San Lawrenz (in the form of parallel parking).
Dock no1 was built between 1841 and 1848. It was the first dry dock to be constructed in the Mediterranean by the British.
The area occupied by the dock was previously an open market.
