The new power station would be creating a tonne of heavy fuel oil sludge daily which the plant would be unable to fire from its machine pistons, Opposition spokesman for the Environment Leo Brincat said.

He said that when this week he questioned the minister as to whether the government was in a situation to say how the plant’s toxic waste was to be transported, the minister replied that no such waste would be generated.

This, Mr Brincat said, was a deceitful reply. The government had a lot to hide on the issue so much so that whenever the PL and environmental experts pointed out that Mepa would not be including regulations on the sludge disposal in environmental permits, it did not say anything.

This, he said, was a point of serious concern even because one could not forget the dangerous sodium sulphate waste, some 30 tonnes of which were to be created daily and which would have to be disposed.
