Government should take stand on situation in Libya - AD

The Maltese government should take the initiative take a stand on the serious situation in Libya, together with its EU partners, Alternattiva Demokratika said.

In a statement it expressed its solidarity with the democratic non-violent forces calling for change in Libya.

EU and international affairs spokesman Arnold Cassola said that according to reports by Amnesty International, more than 45 people were killed in Libya by Friday evening.

“It would seem that Benghazi Airport has been occupied by the anti-Gaddafi demonstrators and that the third largest city in Libya, Beida, in Cyrenaica, has been taken over by the people demonstrating against the dictatorial Libyan regime.”

He said that, unfortunately, it seemed that the Libyan authorities were using disproportionate force against the people. On the other hand, some reacted by hanging three policemen loyal to the Gaddafi regime.

“Violence is to be condemned, whatever part it comes from,” he said.

AD chairman Michael Brigugliosaid:

"The PN and the PL should wake up from their multi-decennial servile attitude towards Muammar Gaddafi and condemn all acts of violence, which are totally unacceptable, whilst spurring the EU to make its voice heard.”
