Mepa is to award a contract for the drawing up of a three dimensional map of Malta and Gozo.
Tenders are currently being evaluated, and it is hoped that the project will be completed by the 2013, environment protection officer Elaine Schiberras told reporters today.
She said the map will be drawn up using laser and radar as part of the LIDAR system.
The map is needed for more effective monitoring of the environment.
It will form part of a comprehensive environment monitoring system, costing €4.8 million, which will also including the monitoring of air and water quality, radiation, noise and soil quality.
Mepa recently also started working on a action plan and a modelling system to monitor noise.
