Historic storm wreaked havoc across Mediterranean
A wrecked boat that ran aground in Santa Marija Bay in Comino during Storm Harry in January has been removed by Transport Malta.
Following a notice to mariners, TM started an operation to remove the wreck, together with other debris, on Tuesday, and completed the work on Thursday. The work was carried out by divers assisted by the vessels Sea Express and Sea Express II.
Storm Harry brought Malta to a standstill on January 20, causing widespread damage across the islands with winds exceeding 100 kilometres per hour.
Għar Lapsi bay was transformed beyond recognition, part of the historic Chalet in Sliema was stripped away, a piece of Filfla broke off, Malta’s tallest tree toppled over, and both air and sea travel were disrupted. Valletta’s Ta’ Ġieżu church was flooded, while several coastal businesses were left decimated.
Storm Harry caused over €12 million in insured damage, with total losses likely even higher due to claims filed with overseas insurers, industry figures show.
Earlier this week, the Transport Minister announced that repair works on the fast ferry terminal in Valletta are expected to be completed in the coming days after it was severely damaged in the storm.
