A clearer picture of the destination of the sixth European Parliament election seat emerged this morning following the transfer of Arnold Cassola's votes.

The seat is likely to be won by the Labour Party.

A total of 3,189 of Prof Cassola's votes were non-transferable. The PL got 2,238 of the remainder and the PN 2,087.

The candidates that benefited most were Edward Scicluna, Louis Grech and Marlene Mizzi among the Labour candidates, with Mrs Mizzi's total vote now reaching 21,339. Mrs Mizzi is seen as the main candidate for the sixth seat.

The PN candidates who benefited the most were David Casa and Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas winning 804 votes and 801 votes respectively. Dr Metsola Tedesco Triccas's total is now 14,308.

Officials explained that even if Dr Metsola Tedesco Triccas inherited half the votes of Marthese Portellli and Vince Farrugia, Mrs Mizzi would still need only 1,621 votes to win the sixth seat, and that appears to be in easy reach considering that she is expected to benefit considerably once Claudette Abela Baldacchino is eliminated. She has 16,137 votes.
