From his privileged weekly perch on The Times, Kenneth Zammit Tabona once again chooses to scoff at the government's stand on marriage. He also bemoans the lack of official support for the pro-divorce "For Worse, For Better" report issued by The Today Public Policy Institute (TPPI) last May.
He should have read the subsequent document presented by Proġett Impenn, analysing the content of the pro-divorce report, more carefully and objectively. The difference between the two reports could not be more striking.
Dismissing it as a rebuttal and a presentation of diktats is a shabby way to describe the rigorous and professional document of Proġett Impenn.
He fails to acknowledge that Proġett Impenn addresses the blurred paternity of the TPPI's report, the flawed references and the mistakes in compiling the presented statistics.
Besides, these grave shortcomings, the pro-divorce report is biased and reflects poorly on the other members of the Think Tank that sit on the fence, leaving us in the dark as to who, besides Martin Scicluna, really agree with the substance of this presentation.
After all, it is well recorded that the legislation of divorce has undermined the institution of marriage, reducing it from a covenant to a contract.
Mr Zammit Tabona castigates our government for being a stooge of the Vatican. Thankfully our President is of a different opinion, holding views that most probably are upheld by most of us.
In his speech at a forum held on May 15, only reported verbatim by Leħen is-Sewwa, George Abela categorically stated: "The second point that I wish raise demands the courage not to be ashamed of stating that if we believe that amongst the best values, the best value is that of the family, and I believe that this is the best value for our society, irrespective of what happens in Europe; I say that this should be the value that distinguishes us from other European countries and we should not hesitate at all in declaring that our country is a model of what the best values in Europe should be."
