The 17th edition of Canale, a major aero-naval training exercise, is returning to Malta this year.

Organised by the Armed Forces of Malta and the Italian Armed Forces, the exercise this year includes an open ship day tomorrow at the Valletta Waterfront.

Visitors will be able to visit the Comandante Cigala Fulgosi (P490) from the Italian Navy, the Algerian El Mourafik (a small salvage ship) and a French fisheries patrol boat of the Grebe class.

Viewing times are from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 6 p.m. Entrance is free of charge.

The aim of the exercise is to promote cooperation and peace in the Mediterranean, with particular emphasis on the "5 + 5 Initiative" in this area.

Exercise training activities are focused on maritime search-and-rescue and maritime law enforcement joint and combined operations.

Canale involves naval and air units invited from Mediterranean countries forming part of the "5 + 5 Process".
