The Sant'Antnin Waste Recycling Plant is still not generating enough electricity for the implementation of a proposal made some years ago which would see families in Marsascala enjoy reduced rates to be implemented.
Speaking during a visit to the Marsascala Family Park, which is currently under construction and which is scheduled to be inaugurated by the end of the year, Resources Minister George Pullicino said that once the desired point of electricity production was reached, schemes would be announced.
He said that the heat generated by the plant towards the end of the summer will be transferred to the Inspire Centre to heat its indoor pool.
The park is approximately 50,000 square metres or the size of 21 football pitches.
It will have 2,000 trees, an equestrian area and a traditional Maltese farm with a petting area. There will be a 450-seat Greek Theatre.
The minister said that the water course has been reconstructed around the park and will eventually hook up to the tal-Maghluq water course.
The area where the park is being constructed was a rubbish dump in the 1970s and the carcasses of animals during the foot and mouth disease crisis had been burnt over there.
However, the site has been rendered safe and the problems there were in no way comparable to those at Maghtab, Mr Pullicino said.
