It is little wonder that MEP Simon Busuttil scoffs at Joseph Muscat’s 51 proposals for Malta’s future (November 30). This is consistent with the arrogance that pervades the Nationalist Party. If you exist in a culture of self-righteousness why would you for a moment consider anybody else had anything useful to say?

Dr Busuttil is keen to discuss Labour’s vision because there is so little good to be said about Lawrence Gonzi’s record. It really is time for the PN to wake up to the burdens of families across Malta and Gozo.

The rising price of petrol, gas, electricity, water, bus fares, food and clothes has left an impact on everyone. Added to this is the frustration of living under a government that can’t get anything important right but is happy to write massive cheques for a bridge to nowhere, a theatre without a roof, a Parliament that isn’t needed and the list goes on.

Our money is going down the drain. No wonder that on the things that count all we get are useless promises.

The Labour Party is promising enterprise, economic growth, lower utility bills, better health care, innovation in education, social welfare, less corruption and civil liberties. The 51 proposals result from a culture that is alien to Dr Busuttil. No wonder he doesn’t get it!

Interestingly, Dr Busuttil mentions the PN’s new basic document, Our Roots, without exploring any of its detail. We know the reason why.

The substantial victory in the divorce referendum has left them bewildered and confused. Our Roots is about trying to project a more liberal image, to garner some lost votes, but does anyone in the PN really believe in it?

What they really want to do is what they’ve always done best – impose their culture of helping their own and ignoring the rest.

Maybe we can add another proposal and have a 52nd proposal which says: less arrogance from politicians in power.
