The government owes Church schools €4,909,650, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo told Dr Joe Cassar (PN) in reply to a parliamentary question this evening.

He said the arrears totalled €914,557 in March 2013.

In terms of a 1991 agreement, the government covers the salaries of teaching staff in Church schools, as well as 10% of other costs. That agreement had seen the Church transfer much of its immovable property to the government.
