I refer to Louis J. Scerri's review of the book Nostalgias of Gozo (The Sunday Times, February 10) and particularly to the caption of a photograph of Gourgion Tower, Xewkija). The caption states that the tower "was razed to the ground to make way for an airfield, and never rebuilt as had been promised".
As far as I know, the Americans kept all the stones of the tower after demolishing it before building the airfield. When the airfield was no longer needed, the Americans asked the owners of Gourgion Tower whether they wanted them to either rebuild the tower (as promised) or compensate them with a sum of money. The owners took the latter option - they preferred the money rather than having their tower rebuilt.
