Hundreds of flickering fjakkli illuminated the hill from Siggiewi to the Laferla Cross this evening as Holy Week activities neared their highlight.
A large number of people walked up the hill reciting the rosary and pausing to meditate before the various statues on the way.
The illumination was organised by Siġġiewi local council using traditional torch lights (fjakkli) up the path starting from the statue of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane and leading to the hill, transforming the surroundings into a Via Crucis.
Dun Pawl Laferla from Siġġiewi had the cross built in 1903 in celebration of the turn of the century. Adorned with statues representing the passion of Jesus Christ, the steep path lying a few kilometres outside Siġġiewi soon became the symbol of the Way of the Cross.
