A scheme for the restoration of wind-powered water pumps has been launched by the Gozo Ministry.

This scheme aims to promote this practical and traditional application of renewable energy utilisation.

It is intended to subsidise costs related to the restoration of such systems presently found in fields around Gozo while promoting the system as a traditional sustainable application which is still valid.

This scheme was also launched as an another initiative within the eco-Gozo concept.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono told a news conference that the scheme will be financed her ministry and co-ordinated by the Department for Projects and Development within the same ministry.

Eligible applicants had to be Gozo residents who either owned agricultural/agri-tourism property or who were registered farmers whose land was registered under IACS, where such systems were installed.

Applicants, who were favourably considered would be entitled to a 75 percent financial of the costs to render the system operational, up to a maximum of €1,000.

“The use of wind-powered water pumps is one of the traditional sustainable practices that are valid up to this day. In Gozo they are also an added value connected with the conservation of the Gozitan rural environment”, Mrs Debono said.

She said the ministry was involved in the drafting of a strategy that would indicate the way forward towards the attainment of the government’s eco-island vision for Gozo.

Further information may be obtained from the ministry, tel: 22100210/22100261.

Applications will be received by the Department for Projects and Development up to June 9.
