The Malta Environment and Planning Authority has approved the construction of a Lm3 million school at Tal-Handaq, which the Education Ministry said would be of the same standard of St Benedict College built by the government at Kirkop.

The need for the new school arose after the building formerly used by the British services and which housed the school no longer remained suitable for schooling. However it will continue to be used until the new building is completed in two years' time.

The plans for the new school were drawn up by the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools.

The ministry said that an application for a new car park and landscaping works in the school area is to be made to Mepa in the coming weeks.

A new street will also be constructed to replace the existing one, which cuts through the school grounds.

The ministry said that upgrading works are also expected to start on the Verdala School in the coming months.

Preparatory work is also in hand for a new secondary school in Mosta and a new primary school at Pembroke.

Since its setting up, apart from establishing standards on how schools should be built and renovated, the foundation has invested around Lm16 million in the construction and maintenance of schools, the ministry said.
