A woman who helped organise night patrols in Żejtun for the protection of the aged has been presented with the Nazzareno Vassallo Award, which rewards work done in the interest of the elderly.
Żejtun vice mayor Joan Agius, 52, has also created health awareness campaigns and even ensured residents over 55 got their flu jab.
She also organises outings, courses, weekend breaks and a scheme where children “adopt” residents in the Żejtun home and spend some time with them.
She was presented with the award during a ceremony at the Roseville home in Attard, which is under the auspices of Archbishop Paul Cremona. President Emeritus Eddie Fenech Adami chaired the selection board.
In his address, Mgr Cremona said elderly people were not only there to be helped but they could also contribute a lot.
The Nazzareno Vassallo Award is named after the developer who owns Caremalta, a company which runs various homes across Malta.
