Andrei Agius continued to enhance the prospects of extending his stay with FC Zemun, the Serbia Division One club, with another positive performance last weekend.
Agius, brought up through the youth ranks of Sliema Wanderers with whom he also made his Premier League debut last year before moving abroad in January, played his 11th match in the Serbian U-19 league in Zemun's 1-1 draw with OFK Belgrade.
Reports in the media commented positively on Agius's showing after he provided the assist that led to his team's opening goal.
A few weeks back, Agius opened his scoring account in the youth competition in his team's 2-1 victory over Radnicki New Belgrade.
His arrival in Serbian football has been receiving publicity in the media. One newspaper recently devoted a write-up to Agius's novel association with FC Zemun, under the heading 'Maltese pearl shines in Zemun'.
"My objective is to achieve good results with the minors and the first team of Zmaj," the report quotes Agius as saying.
Ilic's comments
Josif Ilic watched Agius' substitute appearance against Vecernik a few weeks ago.
Contacted by The Times, the former Malta coach said the young Maltese midfielder is talented and has the potential to improve but needs to work on the competitive side of his game.
Zemun have six matches to go before the end of their commitments in the U-19 league. Sources have told The Times that Agius, yet to earn a Malta U-19 call-up despite his improvement of late, will be having discussions with FC Zemun with a view of extending his contract by another season before he returns to Malta on June 12.
