A 19-year-old man died and another was grievously injured in a car crash in Rabat on Sunday morning. 

Julian Spiteri, from Attard, was driving a Volkswagen Bora when he lost control and crashed into a tree on Triq tal-Infetti at around 11am.

His passenger, Matthew Tabone, also 19 and from Attard, suffered grievous injuries.

The impact was so severe, the car's engine was forced to the other side of the road.

The passenger was given first aid by a medical team on site and then taken to hospital by ambulance. The Civil Protection Department also gave assistance on site.

An inquiry is being held and police are investigating.

In a Facebook post, the Law Students' Association described the teenage victim as "an active law student" and said its deep condolences were with his family and friends.

It said their thoughts and prayers were also with the passenger and wished him a speedy recovery.
