Adds PL statement

Fgura mayor Darren Marmara has resigned the mayorship but remains a councillor.

He told the media gathered outside the council offices where a council meeting today was expected to debate a motion of no confidence in him, that he was resigning in the best interest of the locality.

The PL yesterday said it was supporting a no confidence motion in the mayor, who said he did not know why such action was being taken.

Mr Marmara told the media he had met party deputy leader Tony Abela. He did not go in for the meeting and did not take questions from the press.

During the meeting, presided over by deputy mayor Anthony de Giovanni the motion against Mr Marmara was withdrawn. The meeting was adjourned to Wednesday when the new mayor and deputy mayor are expected to be elected.

PL STATEMENT

The PL thanked Mr Marmara for understanding the situation and for his declaration that he was to continue working as a councillor within the PL group.

The PL said that at no time did it want to cast a bad light on the former mayor and hoped he would also continue working within other party structures.

It hoped all councillors would continue working in Fgura’s best interests.
