A bevy of 12 swans landed in a reservoir in Marsalforn valley this morning, attracting many people to the area to enjoy the unusual sight.

Policemen were sent to the site at once to deter illegal hunting on an island where illegalities are not uncommon. 

The swans - four adults and eight juveniles - are believed to have migrated further south than normal because of cold weather in Europe.

The reservoir is full to the brim with water after the rain during the past weeks. 

Although the sight of mute swans' is known to be very rare, some of these birds are recorded in Malta from time to time in winter (mostly December and January), especially when a very cold winter envelops Europe, Birdlife said. 

"Birdlife hopes the public enjoys this rare spectacle. This is the right way to enjoy the beauty of nature."

A flock of 13 swans was seen off Qbajjar yesterday, according to witnesses, probably the same group recorded today.
