PA proposes afforestation of old Ħondoq ir-Rummien quarry
Proposed planning policy will also ban any development

The disused quarry at Ħondoq ir-Rummien is to be allocated for afforestation and no development will be allowed on the surrounding area, including the beach, according to proposals issued by the Planning Authority on Monday for public consultation.
Ħondoq, near Qala, Gozo, is one of the Maltese island’s most scenic areas, boasting unparalleled views of Comino and the Channel.
It was under threat from major tourist development for decades but in 2022 a planning tribunal shot down the developers’ plans. That decision was confirmed by an appeals court last year.
The Planning Authority said the afforestation project should incorporate features that will help to attract wildlife as well as the recreation of the entire habitat. Where possible the project will include public paths but the area will not be made accessible to vehicular traffic.
The proposed policy also excludes any additional beach facilities, new commercial facilities or the intensification of any existing commercial uses. The upgrading of the existing quay and slipway shall be considered only to avoid disrepair.
The swimming zone is to be reserved exclusively for bathing and no other activities will be permitted. No form of permanent and/or temporary berthing facilities for leisure or recreation will be permitted in the marine area near the swimming zone and the shoreline.
The public consultation remains open until March 4. Suggestions may be submitted to consultation-hondoq@pa.org.mt
In a Facebook post announcing the launch of the consultation, Gozo and Planning Minister Clint Camilleri said the consultation will allow the authorities to "turn words into action".
