A Maltese team of young athletes placed second in the 2009 Special Olympics European seven-a-side football tournament in Portugal. The tournament was held between Thursday and Sunday. Their final game against Monaco, which ended on penalties, earned them a silver medal.
This tournament brings together more than 200 young athletes with intellectual disabilities from France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Ukraine.
The athletes - Michael Calleja, Kersten Bonello, Rennite Mangion, Umberto Latina, Simon Caruana, Mark Zammit Cutajar, Antonio Chircop, Ishamel Falzon, Nicholas Dalli and Joseph Zarb, as well as alternates Antoine Pace and Stephen Dimech, were coached by Elaine Bonnici, Joanna Agius and Naomi S. Micallef. Anna Calleja, assisted by Mario Meli, headed the delegation.
The Embassy of Malta in Lisbon offered its support to the Malta Delegation during their stay in Lisbon. Ambassador Joseph Cassar and first secretary Josianne Giusti attended the final match and shared the joy of the Malta team on such an outstanding achievement.
