A massive flag bearing the image of a gold lion on a red background – Valletta’s emblem, was hoisted for the first time this morning on a 60-foot pole in the parking area of the Central Bank.

The flag, about the size of a double-decker bus, is aimed to mark the capital, a world heritage site, in a way that was visible from afar, particularly for tourists.

It will be raised every morning and lowered every evening.

Before the hoisting ceremony, the flag was blessed by Mgr Anton Galea, the rector of Our Lady of Victory Church in Valletta.
