The Youth of the Year Award for 2002 organised by the Kerygma Movement was won by TV personality Andrea Cassar.
Andrea, the presenter of the programme Bugz@net on NET television, won the award for her voluntary work and her generosity.
She had committed herself to working with the poor and sick children in Kenya, which she visited twice.
In its report the selection board, chaired by George Abela, said that through her television programmes she promoted a national conscience in favour of the needy and underprivileged.
She also managed to collect considerable sums of money, medicines and other things and helped also in the education of a number of these children.
She was a living example to hundreds of young televiewers both in Malta and Gozo by promoting solidarity, love and respect for others, the board said.
The award was presented to Andrea by Paul Saliba, the father of the late Rudolph, one of the founder members of Kerygma.
The award is presented annually in his memory.
Nine nominations were submitted for the award: Keith Caruana from Vittoriosa, Andrea Cassar from Tarxien, Simon Cassar from Msida, Charles Debono from Mellieha, Reuben Andrè Degabriele from Balzan, Maria Micallef from Mellieha, David Muscat from Sliema, Ira Losco from Sliema and Lara Tonna from Tal-Virtù, Rabat.
