Updated: Agreement reached on payments due to public transport employees - union

Malta Public Transport this afternoon agreed to pay its employees all their dues by tomorrow at 7pm, the General Workers' Union said this afternoon.

It said in a statement this showed how wrong the company was in its statement to insist that all money due had been paid.

The agreement was reached this afternoon during a meeting between the union, company officials, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi and Transport Malta CEO James Piscopo.

The meeting followed a six-hour bus strike yesterday during which services were reduced by half.

The dispute started last month when the GWU said deductions had been made from some workers' pay. MPT said the drivers had not worked the hours they were contracted for.

The GWU said yesterday the money had still not been refunded but MPT denied the claim, saying the money had been refunded in terms on an agreement reached with the GWU at the end of April.
