Is-Simar, situated in Wied il-Pwales across Xemxija Bay, is ecologically important for its garigue and the rainwater rock pools that form during the wet season.
These are vital to a number of rare plants and animals, which are highly adapted to this ephemeral (transitory) habitat. This site embraces habitats such as the reed bed, open pools and canals together with an olive grove. Is-Simar supports one of the three habitats of the Maltese killifish, an endemic species only found in the Maltese islands. The other two populations are housed at Għadira and il-Maghluq (Marsascala). These habitats also support several forms of native wildlife especially birds. Other important species attracted to this area include snakes and chameleons. A nature trail at Simar nature reserve is recommended where one can also enjoy a bird-watching experience. Is-Simar Nature Reserve is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from November to May from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This Natura 2000 site will be subject to the preparation of a management plan and/or legislation in the near future, as part of an EU-funded project that Mepa is undertaking for the management planning all the terrestrial Natura 2000 sites of the Maltese islands.
