Andrew Chetcuti (picture) added to his medal collection after securing his third podium finish, setting a new national record on his way to placing second in the 50 metres freestyle event.
Swimming in the outside lane, Chetcuti stormed off the blocks to touch home in 23.28 seconds... 0.18 seconds faster than his previous best.
Luxembourg’s Julien Henx took gold in 23.17 seconds while Alexander Johannesson, of Iceland, had to settle for bronze in 23.70.
Matthew Galea was tied in fourth place with Agust Juliusson, of Iceland, in 24.20, improving his previous best by 0.4 of a second.
Chetcuti was again in action in the 4x100 metres individual medley along with team-mates Galea, Michael Umnov and Julian Harding.
The Maltese quartet, however, fell short of a place on the podium after placing last in the four-team race in a time of three minutes 57 minutes and four seconds.
Luxembourg landed gold in 3:43.75 while Iceland placed second in 3:49.01.
Monaco won the bronze medal in a time of 3:54.00.
“Winning the silver medal in the 50 metres free is a great satisfaction for me,” Chetcuti said. “Swimming in the outside lane made it difficult to keep the pace with the leader.
“I’m pretty sure that if I was next to Henx, it would have been a different story but I’m still happy to have won a second silver medal.”
“The relay was tough and we knew what we needed to do but still came up short,” he added.
“Matthew raced a fast 52.5 leg while I should have swum faster but I was still feeling the effects of the 50 metres free.
“Now we are looking forward to tomorrow’s relay where we hope to do better.”
Harding was also in action in the 100 metres breaststroke, placing sixth in 1.06.20.
Laurent Carnol, of Luxembourg, took gold in 1:01.24 while Iceland’s Anton McKee won silver in 1:02.81.
The bronze medal went to Andrea Bolognesi, of Monaco in 1:03.53.
